Baking and Sketching Away...

The kitchen is busy today at Amy Atlas Events. Our pastry chef intern, Najin, is whipping up some fluffy meringues and making other wonderful goodies in our kitchen. Our graphic designer intern, Sara, is sketching and creating unique signage elements for a fun project that we are working on. Here are some images of AAE at work!

Honey-Glazed Beehive Cake

Tonight at sundown marks the beginning of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. On Rosh Hashana, one of the many traditions is to dip apples and round challah in honey as we ask for a sweet New Year. Honey is used for many desserts during Rosh Hashana and I have been eyeing this Martha Stewart honey-glazed beehive cake for some time now. I am going to attempt to make this today for my family. This cake has yellow and black marzipan bumblebees to add extra charm. You can follow instructions on how to make marizpan bees here by simply adhering tinted marzipan to sliced almonds.

If you are not feeling so ambitious, you can order marzipan bumblebees from Marzipan World, a great source for a variety of shaped marzipan.

I hope this honey cake will be symbolic of the upcoming sweet year!

Lollidolls from Lollipop Workshop

While I was tweeting yesterday, I saw that Bakerella received an adorable gift from Lollipop Workshop. It was a custom lollidoll for Bakerella with an Amy Atlas Events-inspired dessert table. How sweet is that! These unique lollidolls make great cake toppers and can be found on Lollipop Workshop's Etsy site here. Check out Bakerella's post here to to see more pictures of these charming lollidolls.

Football Season Starts!

Since football season has officially begun, I thought I would share some pictures of a football cake and cupcakes that I had Jill Adams of the Cake Studio create for a football-themed party for one of my clients. This Giants duffle bag was 100% cake and included adorable sugar football baby cleats (the party was for a baby!) Not only was the cake the talk of the party, but it was also delicious! Jill is a master at creating sculptural cakes so be sure to check out her portfolio to see more of her fabulous designs. Don't forget to put Jill's info on speed dial as you start to plan your football parties!

Town & Country Magazine Feature

If you followed my post from a few weeks ago, then you know that I recently worked on a photo shoot for Town and Country Magazine for their January 2010 issue. They were kind enough to feature me in their Fall 2009 issue, too! Above is the article. Thanks to the fab folks at Town and Country Magazine!

Fashion Week - Missoni-Inspired Dessert Table for InStyle Weddings!

Since today marks the first day of fashion week in New York, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share another fashionable dessert table that we created for InStyle Weddings. I'm a self-confessed fashion addict and love to infuse fashion into event details to make event decor look chic. A few months ago, the editors over at InStyle Weddings put my staff to the challenge to create a small dessert table using three colors that have been predicted to be hot colors for Fall 2009 fashion. The colors given to us were Pantone colors Burnt Sienna, Nomad and Creme Brulee. As you can probably tell, these aren't the easiest colors for desserts! Personally, I would have preferred doing the above pattern in pinks, purples and grey, however, we were up to the challenge! Since InStyle is a fashion magazine, we decided to incorporate the colors using a Missoni-inspired zig zag patterned dessert table. We took candlesticks from Crate and Barrel that had a similar zig zag design and glued them to plates to create vessels for the desserts. For desserts, we incorporated Missoni-inspired cookies, burnt sienna cupcakes, and paprika-dusted truffles. It was a lot of fun working with the people at InStyle and we also had the opportunity to work with amazing photographer Dawn Giarrizzo and stylist Mai Tran. The signage details were from the very talented Melangerie. Does fashion inspire your event details? If so, please share! Now go out and grab a pair of burnt sienna stilettos!
